Crossing off another calendar year is a time for reflection. A chance to reorganize, prioritize and give thanks. I am anxiously awaiting the stroke of midnight, to welcome 2012 & bid farewell to 2011. The past twelve months have been rich with transition & patience learned. My New Years resolution is to dedicate more design time to personal projects.

Throughout the year my husband & I encourage our daughter to participate in activities that promote her self-awareness, as well as compassion. This year we gave Ava the option of selecting from 3 charities to endorse & she choose, Same Sky. An organization that provides employment to HIV-positive women in Rwanda struggling to lift themselves out of poverty. These bracelets are naturally dyed with Rwandan textiles & adorably adorned with hand-blown glass beads. Ava intends to on gifting these bracelets as tokens of friendship. I couldn't be more impressed with her sincerity or sense of style! ♥

DIY: personalized sneakers

Get inspired:

The shoes above were inspired by Gauguin’s paintings in Tahiti and ikat textiles from Uzbekistan. Check out the V&A museum for more ideas.

Design:

Keep it simple! The shoes have lots of nooks and crannies, and the rough canvas makes detail nearly impossible. Take into consideration the lines of the shoes and consider how your design will fit in with the stitch lines, piping and lace holes.

Color:

Use Prismacolor markers, and buy extra since they run out really fast! You’ll have to go over your pattern multiple times to get saturated colors.

Add texture:

In keeping with your inspiration, find sew-on beads, rhinestones, prong-set studs, etc. (don’t bother with stuff you have to glue). Changing the laces to a unique trim also helps add a custom touch. Each kid’s sneaker takes 1 to 1.3 yards per shoe, and you can find lots of trims and things here.

Over the years I have amassed a great collection of fabric & gift wrap. Both of which I use during any & all social gatherings. I believe proper presentation is half the fun of partying planning & gift-giving! My husband doesn't mind that I have event supplies & stacks of fabric lining our storage closet.

I can't resist a fabric store! Luckily, purchasing online has never been easier thanks to Hawthorne Threads. Ikea is also a good source for inexpensive fabric. Great for picnics, parties, tablecloths or any DIY project you can think of. With barely enough time in the day to think, I hardly have time to sew. My go-to accessory for light projects is double-sided tape! Heavy duty projects are tackled with my handy-dandy staple gun.

FYI: NearSea Naturals makes a great Eco-friendly adhesive.

Fall Must-Have

These amazing, dry highlighter pencil with natural wood finish and jumbo hexagonal shape are sure to become a staple around our home. Unlike standard plastic fiber tip highlighters, these wood pencil highlighters use no ink solvents, no volatile organic compounds and are biodegradable. Though I don't do much highlighting nowadays, I'm sure to find a useful place for these Eco-friendly pencils.

All I have to say is this mini is the most! I am head over heels for this Polaroid camera. Sure, it's a pain to lug around, but the end result is well worth the extra baggage & cost of film. My husband gifted me this mini machine for my thirty-first in May & I've been thanking him ever since. We recently celebrated our daughter's 4th birthday & captured some priceless shots using the Polaroid. I got so carried away that I almost forgot to utilize our other memory-making devices. Luckily, my husband remembered! We sent guest home with their own mini Polaroid memories attached to their party favors.

A is for Ava

I often come across prints that I love, but when I stumbled upon Editions of 100, A is for rebel print, I immediately thought of my daughter, Ava. She is the most amazing human being I've ever known. The true definition of joy. We will be celebrating her 4th birthday on the 30th of this month. On her first birthday I gifted her with this print, The For Like Ever poster wrapped up my feelings in a nutshell. What else could describe the unconditional feeling of love I felt for her? This year she will receive the print above. Is she a rebel? Yes. She is her mother's daughter. Ava is also kind-hearted, beautiful, intelligent, hilarious & adventuresome. The best attributes of her father & I were bestowed upon her.

My hope is she'll love the framed prints she's been gifted throughout the years, that she'll proudly display them in her home once she departs the nest. If not, I'll be happy to hold on to them for her.

Third, sing the Star Spangled Banner. Correctly. Fourth, but not least, find a cozy location to watch a fireworks display. My family & I will be enjoying the festivities of Independence Day just blocks away from where the poem, our National Anthem was written by Francis Scott Key.

As we celebrate our great nation, let's not forget where our freedom comes from. Don't believe all of the stereotypes you may have heard about Americans. Even the ones that are true in general may not be true about specific individuals or a large segment of the population. Free your mind and the rest will follow.......

Taking your tot into the friendly skies can be a stressful experience depending on your child's temperament and destination of your flight. Getting ‘there’ can be half the fun or half the battle. It all comes down to how prepared you are. Either way, I've compiled a list of my top 15 don't-leave-home-without travel items. These 15 products are guaranteed to help you and your toddler travel more comfortably. Most importantly you'll be keeping your child safe & entertained!

Set your child up for success! Allow them to sit in the window seat & as your flight progresses, explain what is happening and where you are in your flight. Don't expect perfection, talk to your child about what they can look forward to. Explain the importance of following instructions and discuss airline rules & etiquette, before, during & after your flight. Manners are a life lesson & should be apart of your toddlers daily routine. Throw in a couple of fun toys & books for redirecting behavior and interact with your child to ensure close parental attention. Remember to stay calm! If you are relaxed there is a better chance your tot will follow suit.

As adults & parents to young members of society, it is our responsibility to educate our youth.

Minted hosted it's first ever minibook challenge. Their unique Minibook card format invited designers to unleash their vision for special occasions booklets. Marabou Design's Visage took home the Top Wedding Minibook card prize, plus the $500 Judge's Picks, awarded by the lovely & talented, Guest Judge Anne Sage. What makes this win so special is the community of designers, customers, friends, and fans that selected my design to be #1.

When this calender year began I set out with a goal to make it into the top 3, which I accomplished with the Love at First Serif Wedding Challenge my Winter Birch design placed 3rd out of 345 designs submitted. What an honor to place 1st out of the 213 entries submitted in Minted's first ever minibook challenge, earning my very first 1st place badge from the community. In the folksy, whimsical world stationery it's nice to know that modern simplicity is appreciated. Thank you all for your support & encouragement. It's back to the drawing board for me. Big hugs!
